The early bird gets the worm! Give your child a head start this summer by making reading fun! Each time your child reads a book, a part of the worm is added. Flip this over for a reward! How long can you make your summer bookworm?
Step 1:
A) Download and print bookworm and summer token templates above, located at the bottom of the “What You’ll Need” supply list. Cut around the templates for the head, body, pupils, eyes and mouth.
B) Trace the head template onto yellow cardstock. Do the same with the pupils and mouth on black and the eyes on white cardstock.
C) Cut out your traced parts.
Step 2:
A) To make the worm’s head stand out, outline the yellow head with a bright orange marker. Outline the white of the eyes with a black marker. Make sure to place a piece of paper underneath to prevent the marker from getting onto your surfaces.
B) Use tacky glue to adhere the pupils onto the whites of the eyes and then the eyes and mouth to the face. Let dry.
Step 3:
A) Trace the body template onto desired pieces of paper and cut out. Cut out as many body parts as your child’s summer reading book goal. Try using paper with patterns and glitter to really make your worm stand out!
B) Cut out the summer tokens printed in step 1.
Step 4:
A) Tacky glue the summer tokens onto the backs of the bookworm’s body parts. These are the rewards given for reading a book!
B) Decorate your bookworm! Have fun using markers and gems to get creative!
Step 5:
A) Use foam tape to adhere the worm’s parts together. One part of the worm equals one book!
